Deviated septum can cause asymmetric nostrils

Assymetric nostrils can be caused by a deviated septum. Septoplasty can help this issue and not only improve your nasal breathing but also nostril symmetry. A deviated caudal septum can be fixed with an open rhinoplasty approach and may need suturing techniques, PDS plate, or a bone graft to keep the septum straight.

Do I need a Neck Lift or a Facelift?

This is a common question posed by many of my patients interested in facial rejuvenation.

A neck lift only address the lax neck skin and banding that can occur from the weak muscle. It will not address much of the jowls, loose cheek skin or mid face at all. It will minimally improve the jawline. I found a neck lift is an excellent choice for many men under the age of 55. It is also a good option for women under 50. These are not hard-set rules as everyone ages differently depending on genetics and environmental factors.

However, if I notice that during consultation that when I suspend the neck skin behind the ear with my hand there is significant redundant skin in front of the ear, this patient is probably not a good candidate for a neck lift alone but likely needs a face & neck lift (facelift). A facelift addresses the jawline, neck, and mid face.

Nose Job Improves Teen Confidence

I have no scientific evidence to proved this, but I have seen it time and time again in my clinical practice. A teenager arrives for a nose job or rhinoplasty consultation and seems timid, shy, and concerned about his or her appearance. Their head is down and their eyes constantly looking away.

After rhinoplasty or nose surgery, and once the patient has recovered and the swelling has subsided I start to see a transformation in these patients. At times, somewhat of a metamorphosis if you will. Their confidence improves, they look you in the eye and now proudly strike a pose when I photograph them. Some of them improve in their studies and I have seen behavioral changes as well.

Now, I’m not trying to say that rhinoplasty will make you a better, more confident person or improve your grades or attain more friends. However, in some cases, I have seen confidence and behavior changes with many of my teen rhinoplasty patients.

Bags under lower eyelids - Eyelid Surgery, Blepharoplasty, and Fillers for Eyes

I have many patients (especially younger ones) coming in to see me regarding concerns about their lower eyelids. The do not like the heavy appearance of their lower lids, the deep groove, the “bags”, or the dark circles under the eyes.

The “bags” are due to the fat starting to push out due to weaking of the tissues around the eye. The deep groove can cause a shadowed appearance creating the circles under the eyes and give a tired appearance.

Treatment can consist of non-surgical filler injections into this groove. This is typically reserved for younger patients with shallow grooves that don’t require much filler, patients who are poor surgical candidates due to medical reasons, or patients who just simply don’t want surgery.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is another excellent more permanent way to treat these bags by removing a portion of this fat or repositioning the fat into the groove. This creates a more youthful eyelid that looks less tired, without the bags under the eyes or dark circles under the eyes.

Recovery after lower eyelid surgery is typically 7-10 days.

How long will a facelift last?

Facelift surgery typically will last approximately 15 years. A facelift does not halt the aging process. Your face and neck will continue to mature over time. However, your face 10-15 years after your facelift will likely look as good if not better than it did just before you had the surgery.

Most patients undergo facelift surgery in their 50’s and 60’s.
