Otoplasty or Ear Pinning for Protruding Ears

Otoplasty or ear pinning is a common procedure that I perform under sedation in adults or general anesthesia for children.

Ear surgery for protruding ears can truly help a child’s self esteem during a time when their appearance is becoming important to them and their peers. Typically, the majority of ear growth is complete at age 5-6 and an opportune time for surgery before the child enters elementary school. This is also and ideal time as their cartilage is still malleable and soft compared to that of an adult.

Otoplasty is accomplished with stitches or sutures to bend the cartilage into the position desired. Typically, a small amount of skin is excised behind the ear. However, some patients are excellent candidates for incisionless otoplasty. This is done with stitches or sutures only.

The earlobe may also need to be reduced in size and possibly pinned at the same time.

Dr. Funk is a board certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in ear surgery, otoplasty, or ear pinning in Houston for protruding ears. He sees patients from Houston, Memorial, Katy, Sugarland, and Spring Cypress.
