Is Rhinoplasty Worth It?

Rhinoplasty or nose job surgery is one of the more common types of plastic surgery. A common question many patients ask themselves is whether or not surgery to change the shape of the nose and improve breathing is worthwhile. As I have not had nose surgery myself, I can only attest to what my patients have told me postoperatively.

Those patients that had functional rhinoplasty or nose surgery to correct breathing problems due to a deviated septum, large turbinates, or valve collapse have frequently told me, “I didn’t know this was how I was supposed to breath through my nose!”. Their quality of life has significantly improved with decreased allergies, less snoring, and an ability to now blow/clean their nose.

Patients who undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty will frequently tell me that this was the nose they always believed they had when they envisioned themselves. They do tell me that nobody notices that they had a nose job but people are commenting more on their hair, eyes, and lips. The key here is that their nose is now blending in with their face. It does not distract from the other features of the face.

Recovery after Facelift

One of the first questions my patients ask who are seeking a facelift in Houston is how long is recovery. This depends on the type of facelift you require. The type of lift best suited for you will depend on your age, your desires, and your exam.

Patients who are younger and concerned only about slight jowling but not their neck, are good candidates for a mini facelift. This type of facelift requires incision predominantly in front of the ear and corrects the skin laxity along the jawline and improves the jowls. Patients can expect a 7-10 day recovery time after this type of facelift.

Patients whose main issue is their neck and have limited skin laxity in the face and no jowling may be good candidates for a neck lift. The incisions here would be under the chin and behind the ears. This will address any banding in the neck, the so called “turkey gobbler neck”, and the skin laxity in the neck. Again, recovery here is about 10 days.

Lastly, patients who are in their mid 50’s to 70’s likely will have signs of aging in their neck, face, jowls, and jawline. These patients would most benefit from a facelift AND neck lift. Dr. Funk specifically performs a deep plane face an neck lift where not only the skin is elevated, but the deep muscles are elevated. This type of facelift places the tension on the muscle and not the skin and prevents the windswept or pulled appearance. This type of lift provides the most correction and the longest lasting results. Recovery after a deep plane face and neck lift is 2-3 weeks.

Rhinoplasty Cost and Bargain Rates

There has been a considerable increase in the amount of procedures such as Botox, Fillers, Rhinoplasty, and breast augmentation provided by companies such as Groupon and other discounted venues. I have always felt that you get what you pay for and although these offers may seem alluring and affordable, as a patient, you must be discerning in obtaining your cosmetic care. It’s important to know who will be providing your care when purchasing these discounted rates and their background.

Patients should insist on assuring their treatment will be carried out by someone certified in that specialty and in the proper setting. Board certified facial plastic or plastic surgeons should be performing your plastic surgery and injectors with plenty of experience can administer these treatments.
