Otoplasty recovery

Ear pinning surgery or otoplasty is an outpatient procedure where the ear cartilage is shaped to pin the ears closer to the side of the head. This can be done using sutures/stitches or cutting and shaping the cartilage. The surgery can be done as early as 5-6 years of age and anytime during adult life. The ears will be sore after ear surgery but with minimal medication, this pain is easily controlled. A wrap dressing is placed around the ears for the first night and typically removed he following day. I have my patients wear an elastic headband around the ears for the first 2 weeks after otoplasty, day and night. Then they wear the headband over the ears for 2 weeks just at night.

The ears may look over-corrected initially from the dressing and sutures but they will eventually settle down over time.

Is a nose job right for me?

Most of my rhinoplasty patients will tell me that they have never liked their nose since their early teen years. Your dislike of your nose may wax and wane over time, but ultimately your nose will be an aspect of your face you will never be happy with. Cosmetic nose surgery, aka a nose job, is a personal decision and one that should not be made rashly. A good nose job can really enhance the other features of your face like your eyes, cheeks, hair, and lips. These are the aspects of your face you want people to notice. You do not want them distracted by your nose. You also have know what you want regarding changes to your nose. Examine your nose closely so you can inform your surgeon of your exact concerns and desires.

As long as your health is stable, age is typically not an issue. I have performed rhinoplasty on patients ranging in age from 14-75 years old.

Is Nose Surgery Permanent?

Patients interested in a nose job or rhinoplasty will frequently as if this nose surgery is permanent. Unlike a facelift, breast augmentation, or eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty (when done correctly) is permanent. Once everything has healed after your nose surgery, the tip will not droop as you age and the nose should not grow or change (as long as there was not any trauma). This is unlike a facelift or breast augmentation which frequently need to be repeated every 10-15 years.

With rhinoplasty, there is significant scarring under the skin and if proper nasal tip support is addressed with grafts and sutures, then the tip should stay in place and not droop over time as may occur with the face, eyelids, and breasts due to loss of elasticity and gravity.

Filler for Under Eyes

Filler for under eyes treatment is becoming more common for those patients who are not quite ready for lower eyelid surgery and prefer to have an interim treatment with less downtime and shorter recovery. Injectable fillers for the face are commonly performed in the smile lines, marionette lines, and cheeks.

Filler injection under the eyes is another story. This is an area with very thin skin and a high margin for error if not performed correctly. Patients may have “bags” under the eyes and under these bags is a depressed area shadowed region. I like to think of this as a hill and a valley. The goal with filler injection under the eye is to fill the “valley” up to the level of the “hill” which improves the appearance of the bags and the hollowed appearance.

This needs to be done by an experienced injector as injection too superficial can lead to a bluish hue of the filler being seen through the skin. Injection must be done slowly and carefully avoiding blood vessels so as not to cause any visual impairment. With care and precision, the result can be quite aesthetically pleasing with almost no bruising, minimal swelling, and allowing patients to return to normal activity within 1-2 days.
