Does Nose Surgery Change your Voice?

Many of my patients who are professional singers or utilize their voice for choir or fun are concerned regarding whether a nose job will change their voice. Patients may sound nasally if their adenoid are enlarged or if they have severe sinus issues. However, most patients’ voices are not changed with rhinoplasty alone.

The sinuses do create resonance for the voice so sinus surgery or adenoid removal will create a less nasally voice and improve the tone of the voice. However, nose surgery alone, such as septoplasty, rhinoplasty, or turbinate reduction, will not impact the voice significantly.

I tell every nose surgery patient who utilizes their voice professionally or semi-professionally that we will use as smaller breathing tube during their anesthesia so as not to irritated the vocal cords.

Does insurance cover eyelid surgery?

Many of patients notice the heavy feeling over their upper eyelids with excess skin and wonder if insurance will pay for upper eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift. The answer is that it depends. In order for insurance to agree to pay for this procedure (which no insurance will guarantee) peripheral visual field deficits must be clearly documented by your ophthalmologist. Then, these results along with all the paperwork must be submitted and approved by the insurance company.

In the past, I have gone through all the paperwork and requirements of insurance carriers to perform upper eyelid surgery on patients. I was reimbursed by the insurance company initially, only to be asked to refund them as they deemed this procedure cosmetic. I therefore now no longer take insurance for any eyelid surgery. Yes, I know there can be visual deficits due to excess eyelid skin but insurance companies have been too difficult to deal with regarding this procedure.

What is a Mini Facelift?

There is considerable variation in terminology when it comes to the facelift. Many of my patients come in for consultation desiring a mini facelift. The various types of facelifts are typically based upon where the incisions lie and the extent of dissection. With a mini facelift, the incision is mainly in front of the ear and may extend slightly behind the earlobe. The skin is elevated and the muscle/fascia in the face is tightened with stitches. There is no dissection of the skin of the neck and the muscle in the neck is not tightened.

The mini facelift is an excellent option for those patients in their 40’s or possibly early 50’s with mild jowling who want an improved jawline. These patients typically do not have much laxity of skin in the neck or significant banding of muscles in the neck. The recovery for a mini facelift is typically 10-14 days.

Rhinoplasty Before and After

Nose surgery results may vary from patient to patient and surgeon to surgeon. It is important to review your surgeon’s nose job before and after photos to understand what type of results they are attaining. As you are reviewing, there are certain things you should be looking for with rhinoplasty results.

It is important to understand that every patient has different desires. Some want to keep a strong straight profile and some want more of a slooped nose. Some may want to keep their ethnic identity while others want a more Caucasian nose. Look for a nose that has similar features to your nose. Whether it is a wide nose, an ethnic nose, crooked, or has a hump, look for what kind of results were attained after nose surgery with a nose like yours.

Lastly, pay close attention not just to the result, but to the way the photograph was taken. Was the patient in a near identical pose before and after? Was the lighting similar in both photos. This can tell you a lot about how dedicated this surgeon is to perfection. Did they have similar makeup on before and after? Examine how the light now reflects off the nose on frontal view compared to beforehand. It should be sharper with a stronger focus towards the tip of the nose.
