Is Rhinoplasty Painful?

Many patients seeking rhinoplasty or nose job surgery will frequently ask if it is a painful procedure or if they will require lots of pain medication after rhinoplasty. Although I have not had rhinoplasty, the majority of my nose patients will state that the procedure was not painful but simply uncomfortable. They describe the first couple of day as being very congested and similar to having a bad sinus infection. After about day 3, patients will state that their nasal congestion will improve and they feel more comfortable.

Some of my patients do not require any pain medications after rhinoplasty while others may need them. I have found that decongestants and benadryl help alleviate more of their congestion and discomfort than pain medications.

The bottom line is that rhinoplasty is quite tolerable and not a painful procedure with a relatively straightforward recovery time.

What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a generalized term describing nose surgery or a nose job for patients of ethnic decent. In order to answer this, I guess one must define, what is “ethnic”? Is an Hispanic nose job ethnic rhinoplasty? What about an Arab nose surgery? Most of the time, “ethnic rhinoplasty” is used to describe a nose job for African-American or Asian patients. However, it could be addressing any non-Caucasion rhinoplasty.

Typically, with ethnic rhinoplasty (African-American or Asian that is), a bulbous nasal tip is refined, the nostrils may be brought in, and the bridge may be brought up or augmented. The nasal tip skin may need to be thinned.

Rhinoplasty and a Deviated Septum

Is a deviated septum fixed with rhinoplasty? This is a common question asked by many patients. Rhinoplasty typically requires obtaining some septal cartilage for grafting purposes. If there is a deviated septum then septoplasty should be performed to correct this deviation while a small amount of cartilage is removed for grafting purposes. The cost for septoplasty during rhinoplasty can be submitted towards insurance if desired.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Time

Recovery after rhinoplasty is fairly straightforward and most patients are social by 8 days. The first two days after surgery can be uncomfortable with moderate congestion (especially if septoplasty for a deviated septum or turbinate reduction is performed). By day 3 or 4 after rhinoplasty, you may feel like you are back to the land of the living and able to do some work from home. A cast and tape will be on your nose until day 6 after surgery. At this time, during your first postop rhinoplasty visit, the cast and tape will be removed, some stitches in the nose removed, and the nose will be retaped. This nasal tape will then typically be removed day 8 after surgery. Bruising around the eyes is dependent on numerous factors such as age, propensity for bruising, and amount of work done during rhinoplasty. But the majority of the time, most bruising has resolved by day 8, or any residual bruising can easily be covered up with makeup.

Rhinoplasty Cost Houston

Rhinoplasty or nose job surgery prices may vary between Texas cities such as Houston, Austin, San Antonio or Galveston. The cost of rhinoplasty will depend on the complexity of your nose surgery. Those patients who may have had previous rhinoplasty have a more complex nose and revision rhinoplasty will be more complex than primary rhinoplasty. Patients who require the use of ear cartilage or rib cartilage for rhinoplasty may have a higher quote for rhinoplasty than those that only require septoplasty or use of septal cartilage from a deviated septum surgery. If you cannot breathe out of your nose, you may have functional issues that could be covered by insurance. This will fray your rhinoplasty surgeon’s fees, facility and anesthesia fees. It is most important to seek the best rhinoplasty surgeon in Houston that is right for you.
