Recovery after a mini facelift?

Many of my Houston patients who are seeking facial rejuvenation inquire what is the recovery after a mini facelift. This depends on the depth of dissection during the mini facelift. The incisions for the mini facelift are around the ears and temple but do not extend behind the ears as the neck lift incisions do. Remember, the mini facelift is mainly used to treat jowls and the jawline.

Will rhinoplasty last forever?

Unlike facial rejuvenation surgery such as a mini facelift, eyelid surgery, or neck lift, rhinoplasty will last forever. While other areas of the face will continue to age after surgery and you will need a repeat procedure, rhinoplasty, when done properly, should last the test of time. As long as the surgeon adequately supports the nose with cartilage grafts and supports the nasal tip, the effects of aging such as a droopy tip should not be apparent after rhinoplasty. In addition, the scarring that occurs around the cartilage after rhinoplasty will continue to provide ligamentous support to the nose preventing aging.

Will the shape of my eyes change with eyelid surgery?

Many Houston eyelid surgery patients inquire as to whether the shape of their eyes will change with eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. This depends on whether it is just the upper, lower, or both eyelid that are being corrected. With upper blepharoplasty or upper eyelid lift surgery, the excess skin of the upper eyelid is removed and occasionally excess fat is excised.

With lower eyelid bags surgery, the excess fat is removed or repositioned and skin is trimmed. With patients that have loose lower eyelids, blepharoplasty can cause the lower eyelid to droop if it is not suspended. Suspending the lower eyelid margin with canthopexy or canthoplasty can change the shape of the eyelid.

What is a short scar facelift?

A short scar facelift or mini facelift is one which primarily treats the jowls and jawline. This is a type of lift that spares the full dissection of the neck skin allow for a shorter recovery time of about 2 weeks. The mini facelift incisions do not extend behind the ear and into the hairline as the neck lift incisions would. The longevity and degree of correction with the mini facelift will depend on the extent of dissection. I like to perform a deep plane dissection where the skin is elevated and then the ligaments under the muscle or SMAS are released to provide a better facelift. This does cause a little more swelling but ultimately allows for a stronger short scar facelift.

Do I have to have rib cartilage for revision rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a complex surgery in which additional cartilage is frequently required to reconstruct the nose. During primary rhinoplasty or the first nose job surgery, a septoplasty for a deviated septum may have been performed or septal cartilage may have been removed to use for grafting purposes during the rhinoplasty. If septal cartilage is unavailable for a revision rhinoplasty, then other cartilage would be required.

Ear cartilage is an adequate alternative to septal cartilage for revision rhinoplasty. This works well for the nasal tip and around the nostrils. However, ear cartilage is curved and more flimsy than septal cartilage and therefore is not a great alternative when revision rhinoplasty is necessary to straighten a crooked nose or build up the nasal bridge.

Rib cartilage is a good option when more sturdy and straight cartilage is necessary to rebuild the nose. Rib cartilage can be autologous (patient’s own rib) or cadaver rib. Cadaver rib comes from a screened donor and is purified and irradiated. It is an excellent alternative if the patient’s own rib is not an option.
