Is Eyelid Surgery Painful?

Many patients ask if eyelid surgery is painful and what recovery is like. Eyelid surgery is actually quite well tolerated and truly not a painful surgery. In fact, upper eyelid surgery can be done under local anesthesia and will likely only require some extra strength tylenol for any pain. Lower eyelid surgery can cause more irritation but is also not a painful procedure. Patients describe lower eyelid bag surgery as feeling as though their eyes are scratchy and uncomfortable but rarely describe significant pain. The transconjunctival approach also affords minimal pain after lower blepharoplasty.
