Is rhinoplasty permanent?

Unlike other cosmetic surgeries such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, or neck lift, rhinoplasty is a permanent surgery. Once the swelling has subsided and everything has healed, the results of rhinoplasty are typically permanent. The nose will not age like the face and eyelids will continue to do. The tip of the nose will not droop over time, if it was sufficiently supported with cartilage grafts, as it would naturally.

If performed properly, rhinoplasty will create a more refined, permanent improvement to the nose.

Can Rhinoplasty Make My Nose Thinner?

Rhinoplasty can make a nose thinner depending on the nose. Every nose is different and each nose has different cartilage and skin. Rhinoplasty or nose job surgery can narrow the nasal bones with controlled fractures, can narrow the middle vault or cartilage in the center of the nose with stitches or sutures. It can also narrow the tip of the nose with cartilage reshaping, trimming, and suture/stitch techniques to narrow the cartilage. The nostrils can also be narrowed during rhinoplasty and nostril flare can be corrected. Lastly, thick nasal skin can be thinned or defatted during rhinoplasty to provide a thinner nose. Seek a rhinoplasty surgeon with experience to see if rhinoplasty can make a nose thinner.

How long does rhinoplasty take?

Rhinoplasty surgery is a complex operation that takes patience and experience to perform. The time it takes to perform rhinoplasty is dependent on the complexity of the nose and the rhinoplasty surgeon. On average, Dr. Funk’s rhinoplasty take 1.5-3 hours. This is dependent on the severity of functional issues like a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or nasal valve collapse. Crooked noses may take longer to get perfectly straight on the operating room table and bringing in the nostrils or alar base reduction may require another 20-30 minutes of operating room time.

What is most important is that the surgeon takes his or her time to obtain the desired cosmetic and functional nasal result regardless of how long the rhinoplasty surgery takes.

Facelift or Necklift?

Many of my Houston patients are unsure if they need a facelift or a neck lift or both. This depends on what bothers you most. A mini facelift or short scar facelift will address the jowls, jawline, mid face, and some of the neck. This will lift the cheeks and create the appearance of a higher cheek bone.

A neck lift will tighten the neck and slightly improve the jawline. It will minimally address the jowls and will not address the mid face or cheeks. This is an excellent lift for men.

The scars for the neck lift will extend behind the ear and somewhat in front of the ear whereas the scars for a mini-lift will extend into the hairline, down in front of the ear and behind the earlobe.

Asian Rhinoplasty

Asian patients who visit my Houston office seeking rhinoplasty typically have similar requests. Asian rhinoplasty typically consists of building up a bridge, refining the nasal tip and increasing the projection of the nasal tip or how far it sticks out off the face. Asian rhinoplasty also entails narrowing the nostrils and creating better “lines” to the nose with osteotomies during nasal surgery. Asian nose skin is typically thicker than Caucasian skin especially in the tip therefore the amount of refinement of the tip is limited. In addition, darker pigmented Asian skin does not heal as well and the scars can be seen more readily or are more pigmented than in Caucasian skin.
