Laser Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surger or blepharoplasty can be performed in numerous types of fashions. Laser eyelid surgery or laser blepharoplasty is a method of eyelid surgery or eyelid lift where a laser is used to make the incision as opposed to a scalpel. Proponents of laser blepharoplasty claim that the laser causes less bleeding and swelling. There is no right or wrong instrument to perform blepharoplasty, as long as it is perfumed well. There are no studies to show less bleeding, pain, or swelling with laser eyelid surgery then without the laser. The most important factor to obtain the best result is to seek a board certified surgeon with experience performing eyelid surgery.

Does Revision Rhinoplasty Take Longer to Heal?

Many of my Houston revision rhinoplasty patients desiring to revise a botched nose job think it requires a small adjustment or nip/tuck. Most revision rhinoplasty surgeries require much more than that and the surgery is much more complicated.

Every time someone enters the nose or operates on the nose, scar tissue is left behind and surrounds the cartilaginous framework of the nose. This makes it quite difficult to manipulate, shape, and sculpt this cartilage. After revision rhinoplasty, more scar tissue is laid down on top of the original scar tissue. This makes the wound healing process a little less predictable. It also leads to longer healing time and more swelling.

Patients considering revision rhinoplasty should understand the complexity of the procedure and have appropriate expectations for their result. Improvement is the ultimate goal with revision rhinoplasty and a healthy understanding of your goals and expectations should be met between you and your rhinoplasty surgeon.

Under Eye Bags Surgery

Many Houston patients complain of under eye bags, dark circles, or a tired appearance to their eyes in my office. Under eye bags are due to protruding fat that surrounds our eyeball normally to protect it from trauma and grease the muscles around our eyes. Sometimes, we simply need to remove this fat during blepharoplasty and some excess skin. Other times, we may need to remove some fat and mobilize some other fat in order avoid a sunken in appearance or hollowed appearance. Under eye bag surgery or lower blepharoplasty is an intricate operation.

In most cases, eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty can be approached through the inside of the eye or a transconjunctival approach. This is safer with a smaller risk to the lower eyelid drooping afterwards. An external approach to the fat is sometimes necessary if there are malar bags or malar edema. Then an extended blepharoplasty may be necessary.

Will rhinoplasty help sleep apnea

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients have issues with breathing through their nose and are heavy mouth breathers at night. They may claim to have snoring issues and their partner may state that they gasp for air or stop breathing. These patients may have sleep apnea. While rhinoplasty truly means changing the shape of the nose, septoplasty or fixing a deviated septum and turbinate reduction for enlarged turbinates is frequently performed at the same time as rhinoplasty. These procedures will improve nasal breathing and snoring but rhinoplasty will not treat sleep apnea.

Now, some of these patients may not have sleep apnea but simply arousals or respiratory disturbance due to snoring. In that case, rhinoplasty will help with their sleep. Some true sleep apnea patients require CPAP and may not tolerate the CPAP mask or the pressure they are on due to a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates. Rhinoplasty with septoplasty, possible valve repair, and turbinate reduction would allow them to tolerate those pressures.

Is rhinoplasty consultation free?

Many who call our office inquire as to whether rhinoplasty consultation is free or if there is a fee. Rhinoplasty is a complicated operation and may be one of the more difficult surgeries in plastic surgery. When seeking nose job surgery or rhinoplasty, it is important to see a surgeon with lots of experience with rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty. Just as you would seek advice from any other professional such as an attorney, accountant, or architect, this advice has value. We therefore do believe that the rhinoplasty consultation should not be complimentary but there should be a fee for this consult. With that being said, if you do decide to book your surgery within a week of your consultation, that consultation fee will go towards your surgery.
