What is liquid rhinoplasty?

Liquid rhinoplasty has become a more popular and desired procedure for my Houston rhinoplasty patients. Liquid rhinoplasty or non-surgical rhinoplasty is a procedure that utilizes fillers like Restylane, Juvederm, or Radiesse to change the shape of the nose. This nasal filler injection can be performed in the office and is well tolerated with little to no downtime.

It must be understood that liquid rhinoplasty cannot make the nose smaller or improve nasal breathing. It can help hide a nasal hump or create a strong bridge or more pronounced nasal tip. Most fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm can be reversed if the desired result is not achieved.

Risks of Rhinoplasty

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients want to know the risks of rhinoplasty before surgery. Rhinoplasty is a complex surgery that requires time for healing. Most of my Houston nose surgery patients are social at the 8-10 day mark after surgery, but the final results when all the swelling has subsided does not occur until 1-2 years postoperatively.

As with any surgery, basic risks of rhinoplasty are bleeding, pain, infection, numbness, and scar. However, with rhinoplasty there is the risk of a septal perforation if septoplasty for a deviated septum is performed and impaired breathing if the nose collapses after rhinoplasty. There are many things that need to be done to prevent impaired breathing such as supporting the nasal valve after a large hump reduction or making the turbinates smaller.

What causes a bulbous tip?

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients complain of a bulbous tip and would like a more refined elegant nasal tip. A bulbous tip in rhinoplasty is usually due to wide tip cartilages or nasal tip cartilages that overly convex or have too much “spring” to them. The separate nasal tip cartilages may also be too wide apart.

Refining the bulbous nasal tip cartilages can be done by trimming the cartilage and reshaping them. Sometimes the nasal cartilages need to be divided and overlapped to remove the spring component. Stitches are also placed in the cartilages to refine the tip and bring the cartilages together.

Nostrils asymmetric after rhinoplasty

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients want to know if their assymetric nostrils will be identical after surgery. Assymetric nostrils could be due to a deviated septum, trauma, cartilage malposition, or a cleft lip. During rhinoplasty, all the incisions are made around the nostrils and an incision will contract to form a scar. As these incisions contract, the may cause minor asymmetries in the nostrils. That is why as a surgeon, it is sometimes difficult to take very asymmetric nostrils and make them perfectly symmetric.

Will my nose hump come back after rhinoplasty?

A common question from my Houston rhinoplasty patients is whether their hump or bump will grow back after rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty for a nasal hump will create a softer profile and change the way light may reflect off the nose. If resected properly and smoothed appropriately, once a nasal hump is removed, it is rare for it to recur. Occasionally, younger patients may have some minimal bony regrowth but this is rare. Rhinoplasty is a safe and long lasting surgery to enhance the appearance of the nose.
