Alar base reduction or nostril reduction is a commonly performed part of rhinoplasty. Many of my Houston ethnic rhinoplasty patients require narrowing of the nostrils for nostril flare and a wide base. Wider nostrils can be seen in Asian rhinoplasty and African American rhinoplasty patients. Narrowing the nostrils can not only address the circumference of the nostril but also the base width or flare of the nostrils. With meticulous closure and proper placement, the scars should be minimal depending on the thickness of one’s skin and pigment.
