Skin tightening vs Facelift

Many of my Houston facelift patients may not want the downtime of a facelift, want to avoid anesthesia, or avoid surgery. Another less invasive option for these patients may be a skin tightening procedure. It is important to note that skin tightening procedures such as Ulthera and Radiofrequency tightening only provide a fraction of the result a facelift or neck lift would produce. If you get a 80% improvement with a facelift, skin tightening may provide a 20-30% improvement.

At Funk Facial Plastic Surgery we now offer Radiofrequency Microneedling which combines the texture and pore size improving treatment of microneedling with a radio frequency energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. This procedure is done in the office with just topical anesthesia. You can expect redness for 1-2 days and you are able to apply makeup within 12-24 hours. Treatment takes about 15-20 minutes and requires 3 treatment sessions 1 month apart.

Does revision rhinoplasty cost more?

Many of my Houston revision rhinoplasty patients who come in for consultation would like to know the cost of revision rhinoplasty and whether it costs more than primary rhinoplasty. This depends on the extent of work necessary for the revision. Some patients might feel that a revision rhinoplasty requires just a slight tweak, but revision rhinoplasty is a much more difficult operation than rhinoplasty the first time around. This is typically due to scar tissue.

After rhinoplasty, scar tissue builds up between the skin and cartilage and surrounds that cartilage of the nose making it more difficult to work with and shape. That cartilage is less malleable and much more fragile. In addition, there will now be a new layer of scar tissue over that older layer of scar tissue. This makes refining the nose, especially the tip, much more difficult.

The healing process during revision rhinoplasty is less predictable and the swelling typically takes much longer to improve after a revision.

Rhinoplasty with eyelid surgery?

Many of Houston patients inquire about having rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery at the same time. This is not uncommon. They say a good rhinoplasty is seen in the eyes and when lower eyelid bags surgery is done at the same time as nose job surgery, than this can really create a pop for the eyes with a more rested and refreshed appearance at the same time. Upper eyelid surgery can also be performed at the same time as rhinoplasty.

Injury after rhinoplasty

Occasionally, one of my Houston rhinoplasty patients will incur an injury after rhinoplasty during the early postoperative period. This is frequently due to an accidental bump to the nose. The most common culprits for injury to the nose after rhinoplasty are toddlers and large dogs. It is imperative that as a rhinoplasty patient one understands that the nose is quite fragile during the first 6-8 weeks after surgery. The bones are still mobile and cartilage is still healing. Therefore, an injury to the nose could shift the bones/cartilage and cause a change in the appearance of the final result.

Once the 8 week period has passed, a serious enough injury to the nose may change the appearance regardless if rhinoplasty was performed.

How long does eyelid surgery last?

Many of my Houston eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty patients will ask how long does eyelid surgery last? Whether you are having upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid bags surgery, it is important to understand the healing process and what you are looking to achieve. Eyelid bags do not typically grow back after lower eyelid surgery but the skin will continue to mature and become crepe and wrinkly. This goes for upper eyelids after upper blepharoplasty as well. Usually eyelid surgery will last 5-10 years depending on the age of the patient when it was performed, the severity of the eyelids, and what type of surgery was performed.
