How to improve a flat nose

Many of my Houston ethnic rhinoplasty patients complain of a flat bridge or flat nose and want this built up. This may be the case with Asian rhinoplasty or African American rhinoplasty. Many different types of materials can be used to build up the bridge such as rib cartilage or an artificial implant. Building up the tip is also important or otherwise it will seem as though there is a nasal hump.

Correcting wide or flared nostrils is also important with ethnic rhinoplasty. This can be done by narrowing the base of the nose and the circumference of the nostrils.

Will rhinoplasty scar go away?

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients acquire about whether their scar between their nostrils and on each side of their nostrils will fade or go away. The mid columellar scar for open rhinoplasty is one that will remain slightly red for the first several weeks after rhinoplasty. However, by 6 months, this scar should completely fade and be quite inconspicuous.

The alar scars for wide nostrils or wide alar base will also be slightly red and then fade around the same timeline. These are common with ethnic rhinoplasty.

All other rhinoplasty scars should be internal.

Skin tightening vs Facelift

Many of my Houston facelift patients may not want the downtime of a facelift, want to avoid anesthesia, or avoid surgery. Another less invasive option for these patients may be a skin tightening procedure. It is important to note that skin tightening procedures such as Ulthera and Radiofrequency tightening only provide a fraction of the result a facelift or neck lift would produce. If you get a 80% improvement with a facelift, skin tightening may provide a 20-30% improvement.

At Funk Facial Plastic Surgery we now offer Radiofrequency Microneedling which combines the texture and pore size improving treatment of microneedling with a radio frequency energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. This procedure is done in the office with just topical anesthesia. You can expect redness for 1-2 days and you are able to apply makeup within 12-24 hours. Treatment takes about 15-20 minutes and requires 3 treatment sessions 1 month apart.

Does revision rhinoplasty cost more?

Many of my Houston revision rhinoplasty patients who come in for consultation would like to know the cost of revision rhinoplasty and whether it costs more than primary rhinoplasty. This depends on the extent of work necessary for the revision. Some patients might feel that a revision rhinoplasty requires just a slight tweak, but revision rhinoplasty is a much more difficult operation than rhinoplasty the first time around. This is typically due to scar tissue.

After rhinoplasty, scar tissue builds up between the skin and cartilage and surrounds that cartilage of the nose making it more difficult to work with and shape. That cartilage is less malleable and much more fragile. In addition, there will now be a new layer of scar tissue over that older layer of scar tissue. This makes refining the nose, especially the tip, much more difficult.

The healing process during revision rhinoplasty is less predictable and the swelling typically takes much longer to improve after a revision.

Rhinoplasty with eyelid surgery?

Many of Houston patients inquire about having rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery at the same time. This is not uncommon. They say a good rhinoplasty is seen in the eyes and when lower eyelid bags surgery is done at the same time as nose job surgery, than this can really create a pop for the eyes with a more rested and refreshed appearance at the same time. Upper eyelid surgery can also be performed at the same time as rhinoplasty.
