Rhinoplasty and lip lift?

Some of my Houston rhinoplasty patients inquire about a lip lift at the same time as their rhinoplasty. While the combination of a nose job and lip lift has been documented and described in the literature, it is best performed when planning a closed rhinoplasty. With an open rhinoplasty, an incision is usually made in the mid columella (the patch of skin between each nostril). With a lip lift, the incision is made along the base of the nose and passes through the junction of the columella with the upper lip. This leaves a small piece of skin between these two incisions in the columella where the blood supply may be compromised. Some have described performing the open rhinoplasty through the lip lift incision but I feel that closure of the lip lift to the nose under tension may disturb the aesthetics of the nose. Therefore, I feel it is best to perform the lip lift 6-8 weeks after an open rhinoplasty once much of the rhinoplasty healing is complete.

Eyelid surgery and transexamic acid

Many of my Houston eyelid surgery patients are concerned about recovery time after their eyelid surgery. There is a new medication that Dr. Funk is beginning to use that helps minimize bruising and swelling and it is call transexamic acid. This medication is given through the IV just prior to surgery and helps prevent bruising and bleeding. This will help after eyelid surgery whether it is upper blepharoplasty or lower blepharoplasty for lower eyelid bags.

Can I have rhinoplasty with braces?

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients are teenage rhinoplasty patients seeking to improve their nose. Some of these patient or even adult patients may have braces or invaslign. They will frequently ask if they can have rhinoplasty with braces. This will truly depend on how much correction remains with the braces. If there is a significant overbite and the chin is still recessed, then it may be wise to wait on rhinoplasty until the overbite is corrected with braces. However, if the issue with the teeth is minor, then the rhinoplasty can proceed while the patient still has braces.

Facelift for Men

Many of my Houston facelift patients are male patients interested in addressing their loose neck or turkey neck and saggy jawline. Some of these men may just require a neck lift and not necessarily a facelift. A neck lift can be combine with a lower facelift to tighten a saggy jawline and create a more defined jaw. The incisions for a male facelift or neck lift should be placed in front of the tragus of the ear and not behind it so that hair bearing skin for shaving is not over the ear. The same should be performed for the earlobe. Platysmaplasty or tightening of the platysma muscle of the neck should also be performed with male neck lifts.

Eyelid surgery for men

Many of my Houston eyelid surgery patients are men who are concerned about excess skin and hooding of the upper eyelids. This may give a heavy or tired appearance to the eyes. Upper blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery in men may differ slightly than in women as the scar should be minimized laterally and stay horizontal without any vertical orientation to avoid feminizing the eyelid.

Lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty for lower eyelid bags is another common procedure in men who are concerned about a tired appearance and want a more refreshed and rested appearance to their eyes. This is commonly performed with upper eyelid surgery at the same time.
