How does age affect rhinoplasty results?

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients are over 40 years old and interested in rhinoplasty to finally get the nose they always wanted. One thing to keep in mind with rhinoplasty for older adults is the skin does not have the elasticity of someone in their 20’s and 30’s. Therefore, it will take longer for the skin to contract onto the new bony/cartilaginous framework. The skin may be thinner over the bridge and thicker at the tip leading to any visible irregularity to be seen over the dorsum and not being able to get as refined as a tip as one may want. Rhinoplasty is still an excellent surgery for people over 40 years old, you just may not quite get the result you would have while in your 20’s or 30’s.

Where is the scar for eyelid surgery?

Many of my Houston eyelid surgery patients will ask where the scar is located with eyelid surgery. For upper eyelid surgery, the scar should hide in the crease of the upper eyelid and slightly extend into the crow’s feet wrinkles laterally. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision can be placed in the conjunctiva or pink portion of the eye with a skin pinch or scar just below the lash line that hides nicely in a shaded and slightly wrinkled area.

How long before I can have revision rhinoplasty?

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients who come in for revision rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the results want to know what can be done and when they can have a revision rhinoplasty performed. After rhinoplasty, there is significant scar tissue deposited between the skin and cartilaginous framework. It takes time, especially after open rhinoplasty, for the swelling to subside and the scar tissue to settle.

That being said, the timing for revision rhinoplasty also depends on what needs to be revised. If a patient feels there is still a small hump on the bridge of the nose, this can be addressed as early as 6 months. However, if the patient feels the tip is still bulbous, this may need to wait 12-18 months until all swelling resolves.

How many years younger will I look after a facelift?

Many of my Houston facelift patients will ask how many years younger they may look after a facelift. This depends on the type of facelift performed. A facelift that incorporates a deep plane facelift into the dissection will last longer. With the deep plane facelift, the ligaments are released and the SMAS is suspended to enhance the jawline, treat the jowls, and the skin laxity in the neck. This type of facelift will make patients look about 10-15 years younger. Other less involved facelift surgery will take anywhere from 3-6 years off the appearance of the face and neck.

Eyelid surgery and contact lenses

Many of my Houston eyelid surgery patients will ask when they can wear their contact lenses after eyelid surgery. For upper eyelid surgery, most patients can wear their contact lenses about one week after surgery as long as they are healing appropriately and are not having eye irritation due to dry eye. Patients can also continue with their artificial tears even with their contacts after upper blepharoplasty.

For lower eyelid surgery or lower eyelid bag surgery, one may need to wait 10-14 days before placing contacts. This is due to the fact that during placement of contacts, frequently the lower eyelid is pulled down. This may tear incisions that are healing and impact long term outcome. In addition, lower eyelid surgery causes more swelling such as chemosis and this needs to resolve prior to placement of contacts.
