Dry eyes and eyelid surgery

Many of my Houston eyelid surgery patients may feel that their eyes feel itchy or dry immediately after upper eyelid surgery. This is not uncommon. During the early postoperative period after upper eyelid surgery, the eyelids are swollen and may not completely close. This typically resolves within the first week.

During the first 3 weeks after surgery, the eyes may continue to feel dry. This is due to a delayed blink reflex. We normally blink 10,000 times per minute. When performing upper blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, we are directly on top of the muscle responsible for blinking. Therefore, the blink reflex is a little delayed during the first few weeks after surgery. This will lead to slightly drier eyes and minor irritation. It is recommended to keep the eyes well hydrated with artificial tears during the day for this reason.
