Rhinoplasty for a flat nose

When one of my Houston ethnic rhinoplasty patients is concerned about a flat nose, it is important to identify what makes this nose flat. With Asian rhinoplasty or African American rhinoplasty, a flat nose typically means the bridge is flat and ill defined and the tip is insufficiently projected or defined. With ethnic rhinoplasty, the bridge of the nose can be built up with the patient’s own septal cartilage after septoplasty for a deviated septum. Ear cartilage for ethnic rhinoplasty could also be used. Rib cartilage for ethnic rhinoplasty to build the bridge is an option. This could be the patients’ own rib or cadaver rib. Some may use synthetic material to build up a bridge as well.

The tip can be built up with the patients own septal cartilage to define it and increase the nasal tip projection.

When can I wear contacts after eyelid surgery?

Recovery after eyelid surgery is a common question posed by many of my Houston eyelid surgery patients. Patient who wear contacts want to know when they can begin wearing them again. For upper eyelid surgery, as long as there no irritation to the eyeball or globe after surgery and there is no evidence of dry eye, contact wearing resumption can occur at 3-5 days after surgery. The eyelid swelling needs to have resolved so that there is complete eyelid closure after eyelid surgery.

With lower eyelid surgery for lower eyelid bags, there is typically slightly more swelling so it is recommended to wait 7-10 days before placing contacts.

Keep my eyelashes during rhinoplasty surgery

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients are younger and have spent considerable time and money on eyelash extensions. During rhinoplasty surgery, general anesthesia is usually required. Therefore, the eyelids need to be taped shut so that the cornea does not dry out. I have found a way to preserve my patients’ eyelashes while still taping their eyelids shut. Since recovery after rhinoplasty surgery is usually 8-10 days, there is no reason you should not still have your eyelid extensions after this procedure.

Will a facelift improve my smile lines?

When I have discussions with my Houston facelift patients, many may ask if their facelift will help diminish their smile lines. A facelift, especially a deep plane facelift will improve the marionette lines at the corner of the mouth. These will flatten along with tightening of the jawline and improvement of the jowls. However, one can only expect about 20-30% improvement in the smile lines or melolabial folds. This is true even for the deep plane facelift.

Chemosis after eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery for lower eyelid bags is a procedure performed to enhance the lower eyelids and create a more rested and refreshed appearance. As with any surgical procedure, there are inherent risks associated with eyelid surgery. A common manifestation after lower blepharoplasty or lower eyelid surgery is called chemosis. This temporary complication is simply due to swelling of the conjunctiva or pink portion of the inner eyelid. Chemosis is reported to occur in up to 40% of lower blepharoplasty and has a clear jelly appearance that creeps up from the lower eyelid over the sclera or white portion of the eyeball. It may not appear until several days after lower eyelid surgery. With the help of squinting and steroid drops, chemosis typically completely resolves within the first few weeks after surgery.
