Facelift with thin hair

Many of my Houston facelift patients who come in for consultation are noted to have thinning and sparse hair around the temple area. This presents a dilemma as the incisions for a facelift are placed close to this temporal tuft of hair. When the hair is thick and dense, the scar is well hidden within the hairline after a facelift. However, this scar may be more apparent with thinner and less dense hair. Options prior to facelift can be Rogaine to help increase hair density. The incisions can also be placed more into the hair bearing scalp so that the scar is not at the edge of the hairline.

How long does rhinoplasty last?

Rhinoplasty or nose job surgery is unlike other facial plastic surgery such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, or liposuction of the neck. Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients will ask, how long will rhinoplasty last? Will I need another rhinoplasty in 10 years. Rhinoplasty, if performed properly, should last forever. If the tip is supported properly and the airway is reinforced, rhinoplasty should not lead to a droopy tip later in life which may occur with the normal aging process.

Eyelid surgery recovery tips

We are all busy and want to be able to get back to our social lives and work. Eyelid surgery can be a pretty straightforward procedure and there are certain things than be done to minimize recovery after blepharoplasty. Prevention is most important when considering cosmetic surgery. Make sure to stop blood thinning medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen at least 10 days prior to surgery. Arnica tablets may help with bruising and swelling. Keeping your head of bed elevated and applying ice during the first 48 hours is also essential. Lower eyelid surgery for lower eyelid bags is a little longer recovery than upper eyelid surgery.

How does a facelift work?

Facelift surgery can be confusing to many people researching the procedure. With my Houston facelift consults, I explain the process in detail while pointing things out on the patients face. Typically the incisions for a facelift are in front and behind the ear. The extent of the incisions is dependent on the extent of dissection and whether the neck will be addressed. After the incisions are made, the skin is elevated in the superficial plane just under skin. The SMAS or fascia and the platysma are the structures that are suspended to create the “lift”. Some may simply place sutures to suspend this SMAS or platysma. Others may slightly elevate the SMAS and lastly is the deep plane facelift. Here, the SMAS is elevated and the retaining ligaments are cut and released beneath the SMAS. This allow for the maximal lift and creates a longer lasting and more impressive facelift. After the SMAS and platysma are suspended, the excess skin is removed and the incisions are closed. Drains may or may not be placed. A pressure dressing is applied and the patient is taken to the recovery room.

Will rhinoplasty make me prettier?

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients are unhappy with how large, crooked or unattractive their nose appears. Even though the nose sits in the center of the face, it should not be the center of attention. It is said a good rhinoplasty is seen in the eyes, not in the nose. Refining the nose with rhinoplasty should enhance the appearance of the eyes, lips, and hair. Rhinoplasty may not make you more attractive, but it will take the emphasis off your nose and allow people to focus more on the areas of your face you would want.
