What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

Many of my Houston rhinoplasty patients come in asking whether we perform open or closed rhinoplasty at Funk Facial Plastic Surgery.

With open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made in the columella between the two nostrils and the rest of the incisions are on the inside of the nose.  The skin is lifted off the cartilage and bone and these structures are reshaped.  The skin is then closed once the rhinoplasty is complete.

Closed rhinoplasty does not include the columellar incision and all the incisions are on the inside of the nose.  Exposure of the bone and cartilage is not adequate for precise grafting and suturing.  Access to the middle vault of the nose is more limited.

The majority of rhinoplasty by Dr. Funk is performed open. This allows better visualization and more precise grafting and suturing during surgery.

Dr. Funk is a top rhinoplasty surgeon in Houston Texas.
