Will I have drains after a facelift?

Many of my Houston facelift patients will ask if they will have drains after a deep plane facelift.  The answer is that this depends.  Some patients will require drains while others may not depending on the extent of the facelift, intraoperative conditions, and amount of skin removed.  If a neck lift in addition to a deep plane facelift is performed on a patient with a significant amount of redundant skin that is removed, a suction drain may be needed.  Sometimes a pemrose drain, which is a small rubber tube without suction, is placed throught the incision behind the ear to provide a pathway for fluid to drain out from beneath the flaps.  With short scar or minifacelifts, a drains is usually not required.
