What is the deep plane facelift?

When it comes to facial plastic surgery, many patients can easily be overwhelmed by some of the terminology used especially with facelift and necklift procedures. One of the most common terms and questions that many of my facelift patients have is around the deep plane facelift procedure.

What is a deep plane facelift?

The deep plane facelift refers to the depth and extent of dissection performed with a facelift. During the deep plane facelift, the SMAS (which is the extension of the platysma muscle in the face) is incised and entered underneath. The deep ligamentous attachments to the SMAS are released to achieve more lift and a longer-lasting facelift. This also puts less tension on the skin which avoids the windswept appearance and promotes better scarring. Although the deep plane facelift is a more involved facelift, the extra dissection makes the difference with a longer-lasting, more natural, and impressive facelift.
