Why is my tip so upturned right after rhinoplasty?

Many of our Houston rhinoplasty patients will ask why the tip seems more upturned than anticipated after rhinoplasty.  Others may ask why this appears on intraoperative photos and videos.  With surgery comes swelling and the anticipation of healing after the procedure.  Every surgeon has different methods to support the tip with rhinoplasty.  Some may suture the tip cartilages to the septum which will create a more fixed tip that should not drop much.  Others may use a columellar strut which supports the tip but allows more flexibilty to the tip and allow the tip to drop a little after surgery.  Swelling at the junction of the lip and nose may also increase rotation to the tip.  Patients must allow 4-8 weeks to allow the tip to settle down and drop into the right position.
