Insurance Information

Many patients ask if their procedures, particularly rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery, are covered by insurance. This is different for each type of procedure and for each patient.

Rhinoplasty

For rhinoplasty, insurance coverage will depend on any functional issues the patient may have and what is found on a physical exam. Functional portions of your surgery such as breathing issues due to recurrent sinus infections, a deviated septum, turbinate enlargement, or valve collapse can be billed toward insurance. A procedure of this kind is called “functional rhinoplasty” and is typically covered by health insurance. However, any elements of the procedure that are cosmetic in nature will not be covered by health insurance. These include straightening the nose, taking down a hump, narrowing the nose, refining the tip or bringing in the nostrils are not covered by insurance.

Eyelid Surgery

For eyelid surgery, insurance coverage is dependent on the severity of your peripheral visual field loss. This needs to be documented by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. These results are then submitted to your insurance and they will determine whether they would cover the cost of your upper eyelid surgery. It’s important to note that this is only for upper eyelid surgery and not for lower eyelid bags, lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty.

Funk Facial Plastic Surgery considers upper eyelid surgery a cosmetic procedure, deeming it unqualified to be covered by health insurance. Any reimbursement that you try to obtain will have to be done on your own. We are happy to provide you with any of your medical records to assist you in attempting to have insurance reimburse your cosmetic fees.
