Sinus Surgery
As a board certified ENT (otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon), Dr Etai Funk also specializes in endocsopic sinus surgery. Many rhinoplasty and nasal surgery patients in Houston, Katy, and Sugarland have concomitant allergy and sinus problems. Chronic sinusitis and sinus infections are common throughout the Texas area. Dr. Funk is capable of addressing these issues while also providing you with an expert rhinoplasty evaluation.
With endoscopic sinus surgery, a small camera is inserted into the nose and the opening between the sinuses and the nasal cavity is widened. This is typically done under general anesthesia. Polyps and mucus are removed and suctioned. These wider openings allow the sinuses to drain more easily and allow for easier irrigation of the sinuses with nasal saline and medicated rinses. Recovery after endoscopic sinus surgery is typically 5-10 days.
"I went to see Dr. Funk for a functional problem that I have had nearly all my life. At first I was reluctant on whether or not he was going to insist on surgery but he didn't. He showed me the root of my problem on his screen and was so knowledgeable on my whole issue. He talked to me like a person and broke the terminology down in words that any regular person could understand. I would say this doctor was the first person to spend this much one on one time in over a decade of appointments I have had anywhere else. My issue has gotten 100% better and NO HE DID NOT PUSH SURGERY he felt that it could be treated another way and he was right. I would highly recommend him to any of my friends, family and even strangers. THIS GUY ACTUALLY CARES!!"
Balloon Sinuplasty™ Procedure
Dr. Funk is trained and capable of performing Balloon Sinuplasty™, aka balloon sinus surgery, the new and revolutionary technology to surgically treat sinuses in a minimally invasive fashion.
Balloon Sinuplasty™ is an endoscopic, catheter-based system for patients suffering from sinusitis. The FDA-cleared technology uses a small, flexible, sinus balloon catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways, restoring normal sinus drainage. When the sinus balloon is inflated, it gently restructures and widens the walls of the passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.
The benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty™ technology over traditional endoscopic sinus surgery for treating chronic sinusitis symptoms include:
Minimally Invasive
The technology uses small, soft, flexible devices that enter entirely through the nostrils. These devices gently open blocked sinus openings, and in many cases, without tissue or bone removal.
Reduced Bleeding
Because, in many instances, no tissue or bone is removed when using this technology, there may be reduced bleeding associated with the procedure.
Improved Recovery Time
While recovery time varies with each patient, many people can return to normal activities within 24 hours. There are fewer postoperative visits needed for sinus debriding and cleaning in the office for this type of procedure.
Dr. Funk is frequently using this tool to treat patients waiting to undergo dental implantation. These patients may require a “sinus lift” by their oral surgeon or periodontist in order to prepare the upper jaw for implantation. In order to avoid infection after the sinus lift, the natural outflow tract of the sinus needs to be widely patent and draining into the nose. Balloon Sinuplasty™ allows for minimally invasive sinus surgery with a quick recovery and faster healing. This decreases the time interval between the sinus surgery and the dental implantation.
